- Not bad
The good news is that the actual construction is pretty decent. It looks nice, and leaves a reasonably good cut. The heavy hammer flails that come on it are best for heavier growth rather than just field grass, but it does cut field grass fairly well.
The location of the grease fittings for the roller bearings are almost unfathomable. They have them pointed directly down at the ground, on the bottom of the bearing. They have about 1" of ground clearance. Both my grease zerks were damaged in shipping. They are a non-standard fitting; I ordered replacements online. One of the two new fittings I installed was quickly damaged in 30 minutes of mowing.
The little support "foot" on the front of the mower is a nice touch, but mine ripped off after about two hours of mowing.
The little plastic plugs that cover all the unused bolt holes have all come off after 4 hours of mowing. Not a big deal, but dirt and grass can now come up through the machine.
Rather than install a proper belt tensioner under the belt cover, this flail mower went the cheaper route of using the gearbox and side shaft as the method of tightening the belts. The gearbox is mounted using bolts in a slide plate, as well as a single adjustable nut on a bolt beneath the shaft. This is an arcane method of adjusting belt tension, and also requires a shaft tube for support so the tension of the belt does not rest on the bearings. Rather than install grease fittings, this flail requires the shaft tube to be filled with gear oil to lube the bearings.
The rear roller is very small in diameter compared to most other flail mowers.
To grease the drum bearings, one must grease fittings that are both on the outside of the mower housing, as well as grease fittings under the mower housing.
Overall, this mower is decent and could be drastically improved with a few changes. For the money, it is not bad. (Posted on 10/3/2017)
